An Afternoon with Clark Perry, Writer for Syfy’s Defiance

December 28, 2013 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join us at Florence-Lauderdale Public Library for a Q&A with writer Clark Perry. Clark, who grew up in the Shoals, writes for the Syfy channel’s series Defiance and will visit the library to talk about the show and his experiences as a TV writer. This event will be a great opportunity for writers, as well as fans of TV or sci-fi, to learn more about what it’s like to work behind-the-scenes on a popular science fiction show.

Defiance debuted in 2013 and received attention for its unusual format: it is both a television show and an online game. The series’ cast includes Grant Bowler and Julie Benz. The second season is scheduled to premiere in summer of 2014.

Clark Perry is an award-winning writer of plays, screenplays, fiction, and journalism. Before writing for Defiance, he was a writer for the ABC television show V. He’s also a graduate of the Warner Bros. TV Writers’ Workshop. He’s developed film projects for Universal Studios through the Terra Firma Films’ Emerging Writers Program.

His screenplays have won awards from the ScreamFest LA Film Festival and a fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Screenwriting Program. Clark’s plays have been seen at Carnegie Mellon University, New York Stage & Film, American Globe Theatre, Epiphany Theatre Company, and the Contemporary American Theater Festival.

A former film and theater critic for venues such as the St. Petersburg Times, Tampa Tribune, and alt-weekly Creative Loafing, Clark was awarded the Gold “Charlie” Award for Best Investigative Reporting from the peer-reviewed Florida Magazine Association.

His fiction has appeared in magazines and anthologies such as Science Fiction Age, Peter Straub’s Ghosts, and Robert Bloch’s Psychos. He’s a graduate of the Clarion Workshop in Science Fiction and Fantasy, where he studied under Harlan Ellison and Damon Knight.

Clark has taught writing at Carnegie Mellon University, West Virginia University, and Fairmont State University.
