The Design Committee continues to sell the calendars for $5.00 each (or $3.00 each in quantities of 50 or more). With proceeds from the sales over the years, the Committee has presented the citizens of Florence with gifts of public art: the marble medallion (10’ in diameter) embedded in the floor of the lobby just outside the used bookstore at the public library, the 1852 granite map of Florence mentioned in the preceding paragraph above, the grand murals painted on the northern exterior wall of the Fred’s building on the corner of Court and Tuscaloosa Streets, and the large frame that holds a 1903 map of Lauderdale County on a wall in the Local History/Genealogy Room at the public library.
So, for just $5.00 a person receives an artistic calendar with 13 beautiful black-and-white photographs and a written history of each of the 13. It easily becomes a keepsake or a gift to a special friend or family member. The purchase of 50 or more reduces the price per copy to $3.00
The 2014 calendar is available at the Kennedy Douglass Center for the Arts, 217 E. Tuscaloosa Street or contact Executive Director Teryl Shields by phone at 256-760-9648 or by email at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The book, A Walk Down Walnut, by local authors, Billy Warren and Dr. Tom Ott, and photographer, Jimmy Hill, has recently been reprinted. As the book’s title suggests, it takes readers up and down Walnut Street historic district in Florence, with “before” and “after” photographs – along with a brief history – of each of the 29 houses. Dr. Ott’s well-written introduction places the history of the street in a larger context of the region and nation during the 50 years in which the 29 houses were constructed.
This book is available at the Florence Main Street office. Call 256-760-9648 or email the Executive Director, Teryl Shields, at email@example.com.
Cost for pick up at the Florence Main Street office is $20.00. Mailing in a check so that the book may then be shipped to you is $23.00 for the book and shipping. Cost for purchasing with a credit card so that the book may then be shipped to you is $25.00 for the book, card processing fee, and shipping.
